HON. LAORI LEGISLATES FOR THE PROPER MANAGEMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH CASES IN THE COUNTRY
The Member representing Numan/Demsa/Lamurde Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Rt. Hon Kwamoti B LAORI has made a case for the promotion and proper management of mental health challenges in the country.
The Bill was read today on the floor of the hallowed chamber of the House of Representatives.
The Bill, which is titled: "A BILL FOR AN ACT TO ENACT THE NIGERIAN MENTAL HEALTH BILL TO PROVIDE FOR THE PROMOTION AND COMPREHENSIVE MANAGEMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH IN NIGERIA AND OTHER RELATED MATTERS 2021." has scaled first Reading.
The Bill according to Hon. Laori seeks to provide for the promotion and comprehensive management of mental health in Nigeria.
This development he views as very crucial in the life of every individual in the country because he posits that.."if you are not affected directly, you can still be indirectly affected through family members or even friends"
The law maker maintained that owing to the spate of violence and insecurity across Nigeria, many Nigerians have been traumatized, coupled with rising cases of mental health due to socio-economic induced stress and hardship which calls for urgent action to address.
He further emphasized that the rising cases of suicide amongst young population due to depression and other associated factors which the Bill also seeks to address is very significant in human welfare and development.
Hon Kwamoti stressed that Persons with mental disorder, mental impairment and the likes do not often receive the care they deserve due to some hitches which the Bill seeks to straighten.
Other issues contained in the Bill aimed at ensuring persons with mental disorder enjoys full rights as everyone else in the Nigerian Society.
This when achieved will reduce issues of victimisation, stigmatisation on the part of affected persons the law maker thundered.
